Questions To Ask When Considering Charter School Enrollment

Blog

Enrolling in a charter school is a multi-step process, and there are several questions you should ask along the way. If you're considering charter school enrollment for one or more children, here are several questions to ask about the process.

Where Do You Take Children From?

Before beginning the process of charter school enrollment with a specific school, make sure the school will take children from where you live. Many schools generally serve a general geographic area, and you may want to take location into account even if there isn't an official boundary for where students can come from.

If there is an official boundary, you'll want to make sure you currently live in the area so that your child can enroll in the charter school. Should you expect to move in the next few years, also consider where you might move to and whether that place would be within the school's boundary.

If there's not an official boundary, find out where most of the school's students come from. This will give you a broad picture of the school's demographics, and it'll help you figure out where your child's classmates will likely live. It's important to have classmates near your home so that playdates can be easily arranged during non-school hours.

How Does the Charter School Make Its Acceptance Decisions?

Charter schools may approach enrollment in a few different ways. Most importantly, no charter school enrollment process can discriminate against students on a federally prohibited basis. Federal law prohibits considerations such as national origin, race, religion, disability and similar factors.

Most charter schools have certain students whom the school will prioritize in its applicant pool. The prioritized students can vary from school to school, but they might include students who:

  • Show excellent academic potential
  • Have already completed a year at the school
  • Have siblings who already attend the school
  • Live within the same neighborhood as the school
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in a specific discipline

Aside from factors like these, schools may consider general academic and extracurricular achievement as they evaluate students. Alternatively, schools might use a lottery system to select students.

What Documents Does the Charter School Enrollment Process Require?

When you begin the charter school enrollment process, find out what documents and papers will be required throughout the process. Even if they aren't needed now, some documents can take a little while to get. If you need a letter of recommendation, for instance, you want to give the person writing it enough time to compose a good letter.
